causes contribute to consequences; consequences require adaptation; there are political means of encouraging adaptation; adaptation can also be in areas such as waste and environment; social factors can encourage to political change;

in this scenario, living spaces will change with accordance to climate change. for instance, rising sea levels may mean cities near the ocean have to move to higher ground.

sustainable movements have been gaining popularity in recent years, and have contributed to a number of political changes. In the past, people were able to deny that climate change was a concern, however thanks to various environmental movements, they are now unable to do so. now there are even political parties such as the green party that have the environment at the top of their political agenda. if sustainable movements continue to gain ground, it is very likely that we will see changes with regard to environmental policy in the future.

recycling and waste management can help cope with the causes and consequences of pollution. with technological advancements, we can discover more reusable materials to contribute to a less wasteful society. we also need better means of waste management – the current model of filling up landfills is not sustainable and renders these plots of land unusable. furthermore, waste is also polluting our oceans. recycling can reduce the impact of waste on our environment.

governments play a crucial part in addressing climate change. what better way of seeing change than making laws for it? one example is beijing in preparation for the 2008 olympics – they put forth policies aimed at reducing pollution in the city, and managed to achieve them. if governments followed that example, such as creating legislation that limited the amount of carbon emissions allowed, or regulating businesses that produce pollutants, that would help with managing pollution.

international cooperation is also important, as climate change is something that affects the whole world. if climate change grows out of control, it may be necessary to establish an international committee to deal with its effects and come up with a plan everybody agrees with.

adaptation to climate change will be critical if humans want to keep living on the planet. new technology can provide us with a better means of addressing the consequences of climate change, as well as take preventative measures. alternative energy can reduce our reliance on fossil fuels that have a harmful effect on the environment.

on the other hand, it is possible that the world is not able to reduce its pollution. in that case, new technology can also provide us with a means to survive in previously unsurvivable climates.

the consequences of climate change are good drivers of change. the adverse effects of climate change can spur people into action. furthermore, if the consequences become too severe, it will be necessary to find a way to address them, through adaptation.

the most effective way of addressing climate change is to address its causes directly. reducing pollution is important, because that is what is contributing to global warming. there are many aspects to pollution control – there needs to be legislation, probably government intervention will be necessary; there needs to be alternatives, otherwise we will not be able to break away from the causes of pollution, etc.

step 4

scenario 1
technology improves at even faster rates, thus providing society with appropriate means to address climate change. first, new technology has allowed for many sources of alternative energy, which can replace fossil fuels and cut down on carbon emission and reduce air and water pollution. most cars run on electricity, most homes are powered by solar, wind, and water power. economic growth has helped stabilize the economy, allowing for environmental concerns to take the spotlight on the political agenda. sustainable movements have also gathered a large following, and its effects can be seen in various environmentally conscious projects initiatives. for example, some cities implement urban farms, and the amount of green cities around the country has increased. pollution has decreased thanks to these changes. new technology further contributes to a sustainable future by allowing for the creation of new reusable and recyclable materials and products that reduce the amount of waste.

scenario 2
due to the increasing harm of pollution on the planet, nations around the world are forced to convene and set up an international committee that is focused on addressing these effects and setting up norms for how to go forth. as a result, government regulations are placed on a number of sectors, primarily those that contribute to pollution, such as the fuel, automobile, and various manufacturing industries. however, because much of the economy relies on these industries, growth is slowed down in that respect. while alternative technologies are available, they have not completely caught on, though with the government restrictions in place they do experience an increase in use.

scenario 3
a new discovery in alternative energy completely revolutionizes the fuel industry. it is no longer necessary to rely on fossil fuels, thus reducing carbon emissions and air pollution. following that discovery, more technological advancements are made that allow for a cleaner environment on land and in the oceans as well. these new technologies allow people to maintain a similar standard of life while reducing the negative impacts on the planet. however, the consequences of the new technology are still unknown. furthermore, the technology is only available to nations that are considered advanced, such as the US and China. the technology is manufactured in third-world countries that still have no access to its benefits. it is unclear who is responsible for the technology and its implications for the future, whether it is only delaying the effects of climate change or a long-term solution.

scenario 4
because of various conflicts among nations, it is difficult to come to a consensus about the topic of the environment. each country attempts to implement their own solution, however, none of them are very effective. in the US, sustainable movements experience a backlash, thus making it difficult to establish legislation in favor of a cleaner environment. pollution continues to get worse with reliance on fossil fuels and inappropriate waste disposal. though new technology exists and is being researched, it is neither economically viable or efficient enough to replace existing industries. the negative effects of pollution can be seen in a more unhealthy population, with diseases such as cancer becoming more common and life spans decreasing. the average temperature also increases exponentially each year, droughts and unstable weather conditions become more common.
